,,Made in Enschede, Bedacht in Enschede, dát willen wij uitstralen", zei eerste artistiek leider Reyn van der Lugt in 2009.' Anno 2012 zou ik willen zeggen: Made in Enschede, Bedacht in Enschede, Om zeep geholpen in Enschede. Wat een uitstraling.

Enschede, where the sky's the limit

Enschede is the vibrant cosmopolitan heart of the eastern Netherlands. The town is full of life and movement; it's buoyant, enterprising and energetic. It combines village and town life in its own special way and has plenty of room – both literally and figuratively – for a high quality of life for everybody. The town offers superb facilities, a lively centre, and fascinating neighbourhoods. Get to know Enschede and discover the attractions of a town that has (virtually) everything.
Facts & figures

About 157,000 inhabitants (a quarter of the population of the Twente region)
Enschede district is made up of Enschede town and the villages Boekelo, Glanerbrug and Lonneker
The region flourished – particularly with the textile industry in the early 20th century; since then it has become more of a service town
Central position in the Dutch-German Euregio
Twinned with Palo Alto (USA) and Dalian (China)

A town rich in enterprise and knowledge

Enschede and enterprise have gone together since way back, from the development of the textile industry to today's intensive knowledge based industry. This is an industry without borders, with close collaboration between the Twente region and Münster and Osnabrück in Germany, which strengthens the economy of this European region.

Enschede is a good place for entrepreneurs to set up a business. The town's nearly 10,000 employers have plenty of choice, from shared business premises for start-ups and small enterprises to a broad range of business sites in various industrial zones for large companies. Examples include Zuiderval and Josink Es, but also the Business & Science Park and the Kennispark Twente (Twente Knowledge Park), where all kinds of facilities are available for innovative business development. An entrepreneurial spirit, combined with the academic knowledge at the nearby Twente University, enables knowledge-intensive industry to flourish under the best possible conditions.

Roombeek is the site of innovative developments in living and working. In and around the former Grolsch brewery, companies specialising mainly in creative and service activities come together at the interfaces between media, technology, art and information.
Breeding ground for talent

Enschede has a great deal to offer in the area of education. With Twente University, the country's only campus-based university, Enschede is a real student town, a fact further underlined by the presence of the Saxion University of Applied Sciences and the ArtEZ Institute of the Arts. The town is also home to the International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC), one of the most important international educational institutes in this field. All of these institutions attract students from the four corners of the Earth, making Enschede a colourful, multicultural town.
Facts & figures

Twente University: more than 8,000 students
Saxion Hogeschool: more than 13,500 students

Cultural highlights and entertainment

"Cultureel Enschede" presents a fascinating programme each year, with the best from the Netherlands and abroad. Theatres and concert halls are a stone's throw from the Oude Markt. The TwentseWelle museum, Concordia and a number of studios are located in Het Rozendaal in Roombeek. This cultural quarter is connected to the centre by the artfully designed "Cultuurmijl" (Culture Mile). The Rijksmuseum Twenthe, with its exceptional collections, is also on this route.

In the heart of the town is the Nationaal Muziekkwartier (National Music Quarter), where the Nationale Reisopera (national touring opera), Pop podium Atak, Orkest van het Oosten (Orchestra of the East), the municipal theatre, the Muziekcentrum Enschede (Enschede music centre), Muziekschool Twente (Twente music school) and the ArtEZ Conservatorium (ArtEZ conservatory) combine forces. In addition to the culture on offer, Enschede provides plenty of opportunities for going out. You can attend one of the many festivals, have a flutter at the casino or visit one of the cinemas. In fact, simply having a drink at an outdoor café on the Oude Markt in the centre of Enschede is a very enjoyable experience. Restaurants and friendly pubs stand cheek by jowl, offering a wide range of social and culinary choices.
Living in green surroundings

A pleasant home environment is essential for good living. Enschede has a varied range of housing, with homes of all kinds and sizes, both to buy and to rent. Take for example the area of Roombeek, which was reborn after the catastrophic firework depot explosion of 2000 and rebuilt to create an inspirational and multifaceted neighbourhood.

Above all, living in Enschede is a green experience. The town has several parks of historical value, such as the Volkspark, the Van Heekpark and the Woodrikspark. But there are also plenty of green spaces in the different neighbourhoods.
Premier sport in Enschede

FC Twente – Dutch football league champions in 2010 ¬– are Enschede's sporting pride. In the impressive stadium their supporters make a treat of every home game. Winning the national league championship in 2009-2010 was the peak of sporting achievement, making FC Twente an ideal ambassador for the city. But there's a lot more premier sport to experience here. Major events such as the Enschede marathon, the Singelloop race and the Military horse trials attract many thousands to the town again and again. Enschede also has a flourishing sports scene in a wider sense. In addition to the many facilities and associations in every neighbourhood, the green and varied surroundings provide an ideal arena for recreational sport. Walkers and cyclists, as well as mountain bikers and in-line skaters, will find all the y need here.
Facts & figures

    Enschede has 195 sports associations
75% of Enschede inhabitants take part in sports
    66% get sufficient exercise
Enschede has twice been Sports Town of the year
Sports associations and their many activities also have an important social function

Best place to shop in the east

Enschede is not only the biggest shopping centre in the east of the Netherlands, but it's also the most enjoyable. With around 350 shops in the centre alone, Enschede pulls in a growing number of shoppers, not only from the Netherlands but also from Germany. Every Tuesday and Saturday the Van Heekplein hosts a large and popular market, which is among the best in the Netherlands.
